Hello friends,

Some of you who have followed my blog for awhile have likely noticed that the posts have become much less frequent as of late. As much as I'd like to, it's become quite a bit more difficult to post consistently. Life can sometimes have a way of taking over. --In any case, I hate for this little blog to suffer any further, so I am going on hiatus. I'm not quite sure when I will be back, but a good break is in order to give us both a product to be pleased with.

And lest I leave you completely hanging-- my DVD pick for this week is "Up In The Air" with George Clooney. As much as I love me some Clooney, I wasn't so sure about this movie from all of the trailers I'd seen. However, all of the Oscar buzz made me curious. Turns out, it's really good. The casting is great, and the story is relevant. With a nice blend of humor and seriousness, it's worth seeing. Also, in stores this week is "Precious". (If you haven't seen it, check my previous review).

Avon Amps It Up

You may have noticed that Avon, a venerable mainstay in the world of cosmetics, has seemingly undergone a reinvention. Out with the old school, and in with flashier advertising, celebrity endorsements, (Jennifer Hudson, Reese Witherspoon) and online ordering capability. Just in time for Spring, Avon has launched its High Definition line, and I’ve had a chance to try out a few items. The verdict (s)….

Ultra Color Rich Mega Impact Lipstick- Avon delivers with a rich, creamy finish that feels nice and smooth on the lips. Mega Impact also gives a bit of a pearlized shine, so gloss isn’t a must. And for a plus, Mega Impact includes SPF 15. Note: the lipstick itself could use a little more firmness, so it’s best not to untube it completely when applying. Overall- nice lipstick at a good price- $8.

Glimmersticks Diamonds Eye Liner- This is for the lady who wants a little shimmer in her liner. If that’s you, you are in luck. Glimmersticks Diamonds gives bold color, is long wearing and waterproof. Glimmersticks is retractable and comes in 7 shades. If you are not into shimmer- the classic Glimmersticks Eye Line has garnered impressive reviews.

And, not part of the High Definition line, but still worth your dime...

Glazewear Intense Lip Gloss- I must say, I really like this gloss. Great color, good shine, and not too-sticky. I tested this in Crimson Rouge Violet, and it’s a lovely color choice for brown girls like myself. For an inexpensive gloss, this one gets a thumbs up.- $6

There’s one more Avon product that is pending my review, but based on my preliminary thoughts, looks like we’ve got a winner. And it's not a cosmetic. Stay tuned…

The Return of Southland- Must See TV

Don’t you hate when you get into a new TV show and it gets cancelled? When NBC decided to cancel its Cop drama "Southland" in favor of its Jay Leno Show experiment, (Jay Leno at 10pm EST 5 nights a week), I was not pleased. Really not. Headed by a great cast including Benjamin MacKenzie and Regina King, “Southland” was a dark, and gritty drama with realistic storylines and an almost “live on the streets” feel. I thought it gone into the TV land abyss, never to be seen again.

Well, to my delight, Southland was picked up TNT and is now in its second season. And fortunately, Southland has not missed a beat. Southland remains edgy, and has added a couple of new crew members to its cast: Amaury Nalasco, and the yummy Laz Alonso. What keeps Southland interesting is that it goes beyond the crime scene and gives a glimpse inside the cops’ individual lives. With its compelling stories and first rate cast, Southland is good TV.
It’s not too late to get onboard with Southland. Catch it tonight- 10 EST, 9pm CST.

Beauty Review- C.O.Bigelow's Lemon and Pomegranate Body Scrub

It's hard to describe just how delightful C.O.Bigelow's Lemon and Pomegranate Body Scrub smells when you open the jar. Almost like strawberry lemonade in a jar, C.O. is aromatically blissful. But how does it scrub you ask? Nicely. It's consistency is reminiscient of a whipped yogurt, and initially I thought it might be too soft. However, the scrubbing granules are nice and firm, and effective at sloughing the skin, making it silky smooth. And the product is easy to spread, unlike some other body scrubs.

C.O. Bigelow Lemon and Pomegranate Body Scrub touts it's antioxidant rich formula, and contains 1% each of lemon and pomegranate extract. Not too much. The product also claims to brighten skin, which I didn't really notice. On the positive side, while this isn't a skin moisturizing scrub, it also didn't dry my skin out.

In the final analysis, I would recommend C.O. Bigelow's Lemon and Pomegranate Body Scrub. It has a great perk-you-up scent, and really gets the skin nice and smooth. This would make a really good product for the spring/summer season. It's a little pricey at $15 for an $8 oz jar. However, you can catch it on a Bath and Body Works/C.O. Bigelow sale. I got it for $10. Not bad at all.

RuPaul: Workin' It: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style

When it comes to the world of “drag”, one thing is indisputable: RuPaul Andre Charles is its’ king, or shall I say, queen. RuPaul, as he is commonly known, has almost singlehandedly elevated what was once a practice found only in gay clubs, into an international phenomenon. And he, himself has evolved into a one-named magnate. You name it, he’s put his stamp on it: albums, tv/movie appearances and production deals. When he is not serving as host and mentor for his hit TV show: “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, he is penning books, the latest of which is ‘Workin’It: RuPaul’s Guide to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Style’, with photography by his longtime makeup artist Mathu Andersen.

In ‘Workin It’, RuPaul dishes on everything from makeup and hair, to his thoughts on success and hard earned life lessons. Known for such quotables as, “We are born naked, the rest is drag”, and “What other people think of me is none of my business”, Ru does not disappoint in giving his readers the real skinny. ‘Workin’ It’ is written in the conversational style you would expect from RuPaul: honest, frank and certainly humorous. And it’s not just for aspiring “queens”. There are real practical ideas that are applicable to any reader who loves beauty, or is interested in personal success. Naturally as presentation is the name of RuPaul’s game, ‘Workin' It’ is visually gorgeous. It’s filled with fabulous photos that would inspire any makeup artist or lover of the makeup palette.

While I didn’t agree all of RuPaul’s philosophy, there were certainly a number of good “takeaways”, that I found useful and memorable.

Carol's Daughter Tui Hair Smoothie Review

Due to a need to save a little dinero, lately I’ve been opting to do my own hair, rather than make my usual salon appointment. This may not seem like such a big deal except that my hair is past shoulder length and tangles quite easily after washing. Thus, hair washing can become a bit of an ordeal. So, as I was looking for a new shampoo and conditioner, finding a good detangler was a major goal. Finding a product with decent ingredients was also important. Since I had heard good things about Carol’s Daughter’s Tui Hair Smoothie, I thought it was worth a try. Admittedly, I had tried Carol’s Daughter’s Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner and was less than impressed. I was definitely hoping for better results.

So the verdict…
Me likey. First, Tui Hair Smoothie smells divine. Really. It’s almost worth the price just for the smell. Tui Hair Smoothie contains Olive, Shea, Cocao and Buriti oils, and is paraben, petrolatum and mineral oil free. It also did a nice job detangling my hair. I still had a little work to do, but it was considerably less than normal. The lack of hair left in my comb was a really good thing. My hair also felt nice and soft after use. For the record, I used Organix Tea Tree Shampoo which is sulfate free. The only complaint is that Tui could have delivered a little bit more shine. All in all, I definitely like this product and would use it again. Carol’s Daughter’s Tui Hair Smoothie retails for $19 and is sold at sephora stores or at http://www.carolsdaughter.com/.

Soul Train- A Good RockDoc and a GREAT Performance

To commemorate Soul Train's 40-year anniversary, VH1 has premiered a "rockumentary" titled "Soul Train The Hippest Trip in America", a 90-minute documentary highlighting the creation and development of tv's longest running syndicated program. Narrated by Terrence Howard, the documentary features interviews with show creator and host Don Cornelius, as well as a bevy of familiar faces from the early Soul Train days. One of the great aspects of the program is that it gives a real behind-the-scenes look at of one of the country's most popular shows. It also gives the audience a rare look, and I think appreciation for the talent and innovation of Don Cornelius. Cornelius is an often overlooked pioneer in the Black entertainment world. What Cornelius accomplished was literally unheard of at the time of Soul Train's inception in 1970.

And as great as is to learn about Soul Train's history, it's also really fun to watch some of its' vintage performances. There have been many great ones over the years, but there was one that stands out in the Soul Train "Best Of" category. It's Al Green circa 1974 singing, "Here I Am". After seeing a clip of this performance on the Soul Train special, I was thrilled to find the full version courtesy of Youtube. It was so good, I had to share. Al Green, broken arm and all absolutely kills it. It's hard to find soul and passion better than this. Enjoy!!

This Should Be Good...

Andre Leon Talley, Vogue magazine’s esteemed Editor-In-Chief will serve as the 4th judge on America’s Next Top Model (ANTM), replacing model Paulina Porizkova. The venerable fashion icon, partially known for his massive stature, and even larger ego, will be sure get tongues wagging as he spars with resident divas Ms. Banks and runway coach Miss J. As Vogue’s Editor-In-Chief since 1998, and a veteran in the world of fashion, Mr. Talley has likely seen more runways than Delta. If anyone is qualified to pick a good model, he should be. Frankly, I am a bit surprised that Talley signed up for this, and more importantly that Ms. Wintour has given her blessing. I personally haven’t watched ANTM in years, but it just may be worthwhile to tune in for at least one episode of this “Clash of the Titans”.

Cycle 14 of America’s Next Top Model premieres on March 10 at 8 pm EST.

Singer Mary J Blige has teamed up with designer Catherine Malandrino to create a new line of message T’s called the FFAWN and Malandrino collection. The line is aimed is at empowering women and supporting Blige’s charity, Foundation for the Achievement of Women Now (FFAWN). FFAWN was created to "aid women through scholarships, grants, and programs that foster strong self-esteem, career development, and personal growth". The new line debuts on February 17 and will be sold at Malandrino boutiques and Bloomingdales stores nationwide. The tees will start at $39.

Music Throwback- Well sort of

From time to time I want to shine a spotlight on some of the many underrated, unknown or under promoted musical artists who are deserving of a little love. There are so many good artists under the radar, so many CD’s that were “slept on” due to poor promotion, and even a few incredibly talented artists who while popular, haven’t gained the billing they deserve. Pink’s performance on this week’s Grammy’s illustrated how truly underrated she is.
So, as Chicago DJ “The Diz” would say, today I am” digging in the crates” to highlight a CD, that was a bit of a sleeper here in the states: The Brand New Heavies 2006 release- “Get Used to It”. (Ok I didn’t dig too far) Many of us will remember the Heavies from the 90’s with such radio hits as “Dream on Dreamer” and “Never Stop”. (Their 1994 CD Brother Sister was a CLASSIC.) However, the Heavies have continued to make music throughout the years, and have maintained a devoted following. Years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing the Heavies at a small club in Chicago, and it was SOOO GOOD. There is nothing like real musicians playing live. Unfortunately, one thing the group did lose over the years was the much loved lead singer N’Dea Davenport. But after a long hiatus, Get Used to It marked Davenport’s return to recorded music with the group, and the results were lovely. Get Used to It is exactly what you want from the Brand New Heavies: sprawling horns, booming percussion, and great vocals. It’s heavy hitting funk that would make the late James Brown proud. Grooves like “We’ve Got” and “Let’s Do It Again” are fabulously raucous, while “Get Used to It” and “We Won’t Stop” and cool and easy. And Ms. Davenport reminds us what we were missing on “I Don’t Know Why (I Love You)”, a pleading mid tempo ballad that any love-confused woman could relate to. Get Used to It is a great disc to play for a party or while driving on the highway. BTW, the Heavies also released a “Live in London” CD last year.

Grammy Night-Actually a Really Good Show

It was music's "biggest night" last night as the 2010 Grammy's took place. In my opinion, it was the best show they've had in some time. Back in the 80's and early 90's the Grammy's were FABULOUS! It was full of big artists: Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey,Bon Jovi, etc. We, the public couldn't wait to see every show. However, over the years, the shows increasingly became less interesting. Some were just flat out boring. But, it appears that Grammy's are back. Last night's show gave some great performances, and every artist seems to be trying to elevate their game, and possibly outdo the other. Lady Gaga and Elton John opened the show with a fierce medley of Gaga's Poker Face and Speechless, mixed in with a little classic Elton "Your Song" for good measure. Beyonce soon followed with a rock version of "If I Were a Boy" complete with what looked like about 200 armored men. In a twist, she mixed in a little "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morrisette. I must say I didn't think it was B's best performance. The armored men seemed as though they were just there for theatrics, but didn't fit the song. Perhaps we've seen this from her before. LOVED her boots, though. The real showstopping performance of the night was Pink performing "Glitter in the Air". Accompanied by aerial dancers, Pink sang beautifully as she was lifting and twirled in the air "Cirque de Soleil" style on silk bands. At one point, she was dipped in water (which the audience couldn't see), and reemerged dripping as she was relifted into the air. Stunningly, she did not miss a note. Unbelievable. I have always been a Pink fan, but she was nothing short of AMAZING!
Also raising the bar was Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli. I LOVE these two together. They gave a fantastic performance together at Christmastime on Oprah's show, and last night they again brought the house down with "Bridge Over Troubled Water". In my humble opinion, vocally Mary J. Blige is at the best she has ever been in her career. Where many of her former performances were a bit uncontrolled, lately Mary's vocals have been both controlled and soaring. And did I mention that I love Andrea Bocelli. I hope these two keep singing together. And of course, there was no way to have a Grammy's this year without a tribute to the King of Pop Michael Jackson. Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Smokey Robinson, and Celine Dion performed along with Michael Jackson's "Earth Song". It was a unique and nicely done tribute. At times, it felt a bit awkward as part was sung by Michael himself, but it was a lovely and fitting tribute. As a side note, I didn't know anything about the Zac Brown Band, but they started their set with "America the Beautiful" and it sounded phenomenal. Those boys can SANG. Shout out to the Zac Brown Band.

First Lady Michelle Obama- Doing It!

I don't know if you've been checking out the First Lady lately, but she is really doing her thing on the fashion front. Of course, Mrs. O has been lauded as a fashion icon since she stepped into the role as First Lady, but as of late, she seems to have stepped up her game even further. The First Lady recently turned 46, is rocking a fresh new bob, and some fabulous fashions. At the recent State Dinner that was the scene of the unfortunate Salahi debacle, the First Lady wowed the masses in one of the most fierce evening gowns seen in years. And at yesterday's State of the Union address, Mrs. Obama impressed yet again. She was stunning in a most regal eggplant 3/4 sleeve sweater with bubble skirt. See some of Mrs. Obama's latest looks.

Baby It's Cold Outside- Protect Your Skin

It's January, and if you are in a cold weather climate, you probably have felt the pain of dry skin. No matter how many layers you put on, sometimes it's just not enough. It is critical to use the right moisturizers and change up from your summer skincare routine. As it is pretty darn cold here in Chicago, my face and hands have really taken the abuse. Dermatologist Dr. Doris Day recently spoke on Good Morning America, and gave some good tips and reminders to take note of. They also showed a few products that you may want to consider. Hola!

Yes, this is indeed a rare Sunday night post. I am sitting here watching the Saints/Vikings and hoping the Saints will pull it out. Sorry Vikings fans, don't hate me. Anyhoo, unless you've been under a rock, you know that on Friday night, many of the major networks aired "Hope for Haiti", a concert presented to raise funds for Haiti relief. It was a wonderful event for a truly great cause. Many of Hollywood's finest gave their time: some manned phone lines, and roughly 12 artists treated the masses to some great live performances. Among the performers were Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Sting, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, and several others. However, one of the BEST, if not THE best performance came from none other than Justin Timberlake. Along with singer/songwriter Matt Morris, Timberlake performed Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujuah". The duo was in my opinion, AMAAAZING! The harmony was impeccable. I enjoyed many of the performances, but this one really almost made me throw my shoe at the TV, and I mean that in a good way. If you didn't see it, here is a look at Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris' version of "Hallelujuah".

Friday Thought: Where are all of the female MC's?

So, I was driving down the expressway the other day when Nicki Minaj’s track, “I Get Crazy” came on. It was an instant reminder of a thought that had previously run through my mind: What happened to all of the female MC’s? Although hip hop is generally in a bit of a decline since its heyday, the female MC has become virtually extinct. I remember the good ole days when boom boxes blasted out with old school rappers like Roxanne Shante, Salt and Pepa and one of my faves, MC Lyte. You can go to any party right now, and put on Lyte’s “Paper Thin” or “Lyte as a Rock”, and the party will still get hyped. The crowd could sing every word. As time went on, a new crop of more conscious rapstresses blessed the mic like Bahamadia and our girl Queen Latifah. And what can say about the ladies who were at one point, some of the hottest names in the rap game, male or female? Of course, I am speaking of none other than Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim. Were they positive or enlightening? Absolutely not. Were they oversexualized and raunchy as all get out? Absolutely! And yes, I was mad at Lil’ Kim for all of the outrageous plastic surgery she accumulated over the years. But for all of their faults, THEY COULD RAP. I mean for real. There was so much buzz when these chicks hit the scene: Foxy rhyming with Jay-Z, and Kim debuting with Junior Mafia. There was something about a Foxy Brown or Lil’ Kim record that made you stick your chest out and think you were the baddest chick alive. I remember vividly when Lil’ Kim’s solo debut Hard Core was released. I hate to admit it was my guilty pleasure. It was contrary to everything I stood for. I knew I shouldn’t like it… but I LOVED it. Riding on the El train downtown to work, it was heavy in my rotation. Those ladies brought crazy delivery, creativity and pure talent. Eve also made her mark, particularly bringing the crossover appeal, and a bit of positivity. I really dug her track “Love is Blind.” Very real and poignant. Of course, there have been many other females in the game : too many to name here. But I look at the state of the rap game right now and I think wow: Nicki Minaj. Don’t get me wrong, I am not hating on the girl, at least not completely. The fact that someone as skilled as Lil’ Wayne vouches for her is certainly worth a few points. But, I think I will need to see, ( or should I say, hear) a lot more of her before I am sold. Maybe it’s just me, but she feels a bit gimmicky. It’s been said that she does have skills, and is not just another fake boobed Lil’ Kim imitator. (“Barbie” is actually what Minaj likes to call herself). Time will tell.

Maybe I’m just getting old. The truth is, I really don’t listen to rap as much as I used to anyway. I’m just glad I’m old enough to remember the classics. On that note, here’s one for you. Enjoy!

Attention music lovers! I recently got turned on to a lovely new IPhone and Blackberry App , called IHeart Radio. It’s now much easier to listen to the radio on your IPhone. IHeart Radio features Clearchannel radio stations from cities all over the country. It provides all formats: from Hip Hop and R&B to Jazz to Rock. It’s like having satellite radio on your phone! And for you music truists, there is even a section for you to check out "undiscovered" artists. For you who don’t have an IPhone or a Blackberry, don’t fret, IHeartRadio is also available online at http://www.iheartradio.com/ where you can find videos and live performances.

R.I.P. Teddy Pendergrass (1950-2010)

This certainly is a week for bad news. As you by now have probably heard, soul music legend Teddy Pendergrass has died of colon cancer at the age of 59. Whether you called him Teddy Pendergrass, Teddy P, or for the real old schoolers, the "Teddy Bear", you know his music. Both as the front man for Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, and as a solo artist, Teddy was authentic and undeniable. Sexy, soulful, and incredibly talented, Teddy P was the man that women loved, and men wanted to be. He was one of the true original Philly soul singers, and was on top of the world until a tragic car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. However, he kept an unstoppable spirit, and still sang from his soul.

I have personally belted many a Teddy slow jam. "Love TKO", "Close the Door" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now" are still on the late night radio play lists. And I have danced my butt off at many a house party to Teddy's "I Don't Love You Anymore", "You Can't Hide From Yourself" and "The More I Get". It really didn't get any better.

We are blessed to have his music catalogue that will live on. I think I'll be pulling mine out today.

Bodycology Foam Bath and Body Wash / Help Haiti

It’s not easy to find a good bubble bath that gives lots of bubbles that are long lasting. Bath and Body Works has a pretty nice one, but it really is best when you can get it on sale. With few dollars available, I was on the look for a really cheap but good bubble bath: Enter Bodycology Foam Bath and Body Wash. (This product does double duty as a body wash, but I have used it only as a foaming bath). Bodycology supplies a generous amount of bubbles that actually last, and you don’t need to use a lot of it. Bodycology comes in 12 scents including Peach Mango, Apple Orchard, Coconut Lime, Fresh Water, and the one I chose Brown Sugar Vanilla. And what is really fabulous… the 16 fl oz. bottle was only $4 at Walmart. Note: This is not a natural product and thus is not filled with natural ingredients. However, I am primarily a shower girl so I won’t be using this daily. If you want a good bubble bath on a budget, and don't mind non-natural ingredients, you will likely enjoy Bodycology’s Foam Bath and Body Wash.

On a seperate note, I just want to acknowledge and give love to the people of Haiti. In a country that has seen its share of hardships, yesterday's earthquake is devastating. There are multiple organizations through which you can help: American Red Cross and Unicef are two large organizations that can assist you. So last night VH1 premiered two new reality shows: “Fantasia for Real” and” Let’s Talk About Pep.” Admittedly, when I first about these shows, I was a bit skeptical. With the overload of reality shows already on VH1 and MTV (I mean do I need to run down the list of foolishness), I thought “ do we really need more? However, the more I found out about the two shows I was intrigued. Fantasia would reveal her family life, as the caretaker of 6, yes 6, of her family members; and Pep would be going back into the dating world after a 4 year hiatus. The show was also to include a few of her girlfriends, including former BET host Jacque Reid.

So, how were they? Let me start with Fantasia for Real. Basically, the show features Fantasia trying to get back on her grind after a tough couple of years. Her sophomore CD did not do well, (which by the way is shame because it was really good), and her run with The Color Purple had some low points. Now she is back with the Color Purple and working on a new CD. Meanwhile, she is supporting her entire family. This includes her daughter, mother, 2 grown brothers, and a couple others. We also got an introduction to her tough love aunt, (who I loved). There is a lot that could be said about this, but let’s just say, I am surprised Fantasia would allow this look at her family, because they are BUTT NAKED TRIFLIN’. I mean for real...The real character last night was her brother Teeni, who is 28 with no job, and no education. He literally lives off of Fantasia. As far as work and school, he says, “that’s not what he’s about”. He considers himself a music producer, even though he isn’t making any money, and he has no interest in working. The KILLER though, was when he tore down Fantasia’s pool house to create a “music studio” without her permission. It was BANANAS. I like Fantasia, and I really hate to talk about someone’s mom, but clearly Fantasia’s mom was not parenting her sons worth a darn. Fantasia’s aunt was not feeling the nonsense, and was constantly on Teeni to get a job. The season will feature Fantasia attempting to wean off her dependent family members. It should be really interesting.

On to “Let’s Talk About Pep”. I am not sure how I feel about the way this show is shot, but that aside, it is definitely fun. We’ve got Pep and her girlfriends out and about on the dating scene. Her gal pals include Joumana (former wife of Jason Kidd), the outrageous Kittie, and radio personality and former BET host Jacque Reid. (Jacque Reid was the last person I expected to see on a reality show, so that by itself was enough reason to watch.) It is nice to see a show that features Black women looking for love and relationships. The show is giving a bit of a ‘Sex and the City’ type vibe. Pep met a football player named BJ, who she definitely went a couple of bases with, Jacque Reid really wants a baby, since she has no man, and discussed sperm donation with her friend, the FINE actor Lamman Rucker. (BTW, is he single?). Kittie was on a first date with a corny dude who apparently won her over since her toes were being sucked by the end of the night, and I guess we’ll see what will happen with Joumana. “Let’s Talk About Pep” is definitely likely to get tongues waggin’.

The unstoppable Michael Kors

Whether it’s promoting his line of clothing, accessories, handbags, footwear, and perfume, or co-hosting one of the most popular fashion-related shows to hit the tube (Lifetime’s Project Runway),Michael Kors is everywhere. He’s even about to launch a new makeup line titled “Very Hollywood”, sharing a name with his latest fragrance.

I recently took a stroll through his recently opened Michael Kors Collection Store on Michigan Ave, here in Chicago, and let me say, it was impressive. The Collection Store is Mr. Kors’ second post on the Mag Mile, and features his higher end pieces. (The former is the Michael Kors Lifestyle store and features more moderately priced offerings). I have always been a fan of Michael Kors, especially his accessories. He offers a great mix of classical pieces with a bit of luxury. (Or if you pick up one of his python bags, a LOT of luxury).

Happy New Year all!

Ok, so I know it's the 5th. Anyhoo..
It's been a while since I've done a fashion post, and as we have reached a new year, of course, we'll stayed tuned for all the latest in the fashion world. In the meantime, I simply must get your take on two of New Year's Eve's most interesting fashions as worn by Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna. Well, we can say that they aren't afraid to take risks...

Also, I've thought about how I want to approach this year on many levels, including stylewise. Let's call them style "resolutions." (I know we really hate to use that word).
Mine is to throw caution to the wind, and really just be free. My plan is to really up my "personal style game" and take my fabulousness to another level. Ha Ha.

RIP Eunice Johnson 1916-2010

We at All Things Fantabulous must pay homage to a true pioneer in the fashion and beauty world. Eunice W. Johnson, wife of the late Johnson Publishing founder John H. Johnson, passed away on this past Sunday, January 3. Eunice Johnson was a close partner with her husband, and had been truly integral in the success of the company. A dynamo in her own right, Johnson was the creator of the Fashion Fair cosmetic line, and in fact, named Ebony magazine. She is however, most famously known as the director and producer of the renowned Ebony Fashion Fair fashion shows, a position she's held since 1961. The Ebony Fashion Fair shows was a instrumental showcase for up and coming Black designers and fashion models.

Although Eunice Johnson is gone, her legacy will live on. Eunice Johnson was 93.

DVD Must See-Sin Nombre/Happy New Year!

It’s New Years Eve and the parties will be on all over the country. I think I have officially gotten “old” because my evening will be hanging out with a friend and a few cocktails. Actually I can’t think of the last time I had a big New Years Eve party night. But I digress. For those of you who will be enjoying a low key New Years weekend, a fabulous movie that you may want to rent is Sin Nombre. I am intentionally keeping my review a bit vague as to avoid spoiling a single minute of this great movie. And yes, it’s another indie flick that was released earlier this year. But, again better late than ever…

Sin Nombre is the riveting story of Willy, aka” Casper”, a member of a brutal Mexican street gang, the Mara Salvatrucha . Willy is not however as naturally heartless as some of his counterparts, and is leading a double life: part gang member, part loving boyfriend to girlfriend Martha Marlene. Due to an unforeseen and devastating turn of events, he meets a pretty young Honduran woman named Sayra. Both are on a harrowing journey to make it to “El Norte”, Spanish for “The North” aka America. Sayra is traveling with her family, including her father who was deported from the States and is desperate to return. Sin Nombre deftly illustrates the trials that foreigners will endure to make it to America.

It’s hard to believe how much writer/director Cary Fukunaga achieves in a mere 96 minutes. Fukunaga captures the ruthlessness of gang life, (the Mara Salvatrucha is a real Mexican gang), the desperation of those wanting to make it to America (albeit illegally), and even a bit of hope. The acting is compelling, especially that of Edgar Flores who plays Casper, and Tenoch Huerta who plays gang leader 'Lil Mago. Be forewarned, there is violence that can be disturbing. Also note that the film is in Spanish with English subtitles. But don’t be discouraged, it is definitely worth the effort. Sin Nombre is one of the best movies I have seen in years, and in my opinion a must see.

Still enjoying the holidays. Posts will be light this week. However, I will be posting on my latest DVD rental which was AWESOME so stay tuned. A Little Entertainment- The Princess and the Frog soundtrack

Hola,

Have you seen the Princess and the Frog? Kudos to the cast and producers for the #1 showing at the box office. Unfortunately, I didn't make it last weekend, but I still plan to. In the meantime, I have gotten a few clips from the soundtrack which features the lovely Toni-Award winning actress Anika Noni Rose, Ne-Yo, Randy Newman, and a song from Jenifer Lewis. Yes, Jenifer Lewis. You know the fiery one who played Tina Turner's mother in "What's Love Got to Do With It" and countless other mama roles.

Anyhoo, the talented Ms. Rose has been everywhere promoting the movie, and recently hit Good Morning America to perform "Almost There", Princess Tiana's theme song in the movie. We've got it here. She didn't win a Tony for nothing. For you who haven't seen the movie yet, we've also got a short clip from the film.

DVD pick of the week- Sugar (2009)

I admit, this movie is not new. As a matter of fact, I had planned to see this in the theatres early this year. But like many indies, the movie showed in very few theatres. Even in Chicago, it's not easy to see a true indie flick. So, I was relegated to DVD. But, better late than never....

I am a fan of good indie movies. There usually isn’t a budget for big effects, car crashes, and the like, so the directors have to rely on good old-fashioned plot and character development. One such indie flick that gets it right is “Sugar” directed by Ryan Fleck, and starring newcomer Algenis Perez Soto. More about him in a moment. Sugar is the story of Miguel “Sugar” Santos, (played by Soto); a baseball pitcher from the Dominican Republic whose life’s dream is to get his big break into the major leagues in the United States. Sugar is also carrying the dreams of his impoverished Dominican family who is equally anxious for his success and undoubtedly a way out of poverty. Sugar does get his break, and the story takes you into the complicated life of a young man finding himself, and a fascinating look at the experience of the immigrant athlete. From language barriers, to deep cultural divides, the immigrant experience is daunting, and can even be heartbreaking.

Unlike lesser films, with “Sugar” you really don’t know how the story will end. Soto plays “Sugar” with incredible depth and sincerity. Like Gabourey Sidibe from the critical hit, “Precious”, it’s hard to believe you are watching a newcomer with no real acting experience. Soto is fantastic, and as a bonus, sexxxxy. Yes, for the ladies, Sugar does provide eye candy courtesy of our Latin brothers.

If you are not a “sports fan”, don’t worry. “Sugar” is about so much more than sports. It’s about life: the good, bad, and ugly, and eventually how we handle it.

Do yourself a favor, rent Sugar.

Music Thursday- She's baaack- The return of Sade

The singer Maxwell once said that he wanted to be like Sade: to be able to take 7 or 8 year break and come back with good material and fans who still love you. And we know how well that worked out for Maxwell. Well for the divine Ms. Sade, she is BACK. It's been 9 years since her last CD, Lovers Rock. and as usual, her fans are clamoring for her new CD. If her new single is any indication, Sade still brings the sizzle. Seriously, how much do we love her? I had the pleasure of seeing her in concert the last time she was in Chicago and Sade delivered the goods. Plain and simple. I still live for 'Is it a Crime', Jezebel, 'King of Sorrow'; the list goes on and on. When many pop stars fade into irrelevance, or sadly just don't have it anymore, Sade reigns supreme. Not to mention that Sade is beautiful, regal and timeless like no other. Just take a look at her new album cover. Stunning. Pure Sade. Experience her new single, "Soldier of Love". The new CD drops February 8, 2010. Enjoy!

The Princess Tiana doll- Will you be purchasing?

As many of you know, for the first time in its 86 year history, Disney is creating a film featuring a Black princess. The fictional character, Princess Tiana, will be the star of Disney’s upcoming film, “The Princess and the Frog”, set to debut on this Friday, Dec. 11. Princess Tiana also represents the first princess in a Disney film in ten (10) years.

The introduction of “Tiana” into the Disney film and merchandising wheelhouse is a pretty big deal. As Disney’s movie princesses have been turned into globally popular dolls that represent beauty and refinement, African American parents have been left without a doll that represented their children. Add to that, America’s conventional l standards of beauty, well let’s just say, African American women were likely to feel a bit slighted. “Tiana” feels like a small step in validating that African American women can also be beautiful and elegant. Parents, reportedly have taken notice, as “Princess Tiana” costumes flew off the shelves for Halloween. Time will reveal the sales of the “Tiana” doll during this holiday season. Lisa Price, founder of Carol’s Daughter hair and beauty line, has even partnered with Disney to create the limited edition Princess and the Frog themed “A Magical Beauty Collection”, comprised of shampoo, conditioner, hair detangler and bubble bath featuring Princess Tiana.

Of course, the introduction of “Tiana” is not without its critics. Some have criticized the doll as having features that are “clearly not African- American”. There are also criticisms regarding aspects of the movie that are too various to go into here.

I recently visited the Disney store to check out pricing for the Princess Tiana doll, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was only $14.95. I have a 6-month old niece that I’ve been considering buying the doll for. Clearly she is too young for the doll right now, but I am thinking of it as a collector’s item. Although I too am questioning some aspects of the movie, frankly, I am not sure when we will see this again.

Islands of the World Fashion Week 2009

View from my hotel balcony- Aaah....

About a month ago, I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd annual Islands of the World Fashion Week in Nassau, Bahamas. It was a 3 evening event which showcased hot designers from island countries. Designers from Trinidad, Barbados, French Guyana, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Madagascar, and the Bahamas represented. The audience was also treated to the latest wares from international guest designers Leanne Marshall (Project Runway winner), and design veterans, b michael, and Henry Nathaniel Jackson for HNJ.

And you know the islands keep the party flowing, so there were nightly after-parties to make sure a good time was had by all. The only downside was that it was a bit cool. I was expecting upper 80's, and brought clothes accordingly. Uuuh, not so much. It felt like Chicago, so I was running around the Bahamas with a sweater!! Otherwise I had a blast.

Here are a few photos of some the designers that were featured. My personal faves were the FABULOUS Eric Raisina, awesome newcomer Darcel de Vlugt, and the ingenious Patrick Lafrontiere. Trust me, you will hear these names again. Enjoy!!

The return of the Soul Train Music Awards

Long and busy weekend. Beauty Monday will be tomorrow.
Today, it's about the Soul Train Music Awards. Back after a two year hiatus, Soul Train returned on its new network= BET Centric. The show also aired simultaneously on BET. I unfortunately was flipping between Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters and The Soul Train Music Awards, so I didn't see all of it. I do have it on my DVR, so I can catch up on anything I missed. However, I did catch some keys moments.
Observations:

Hosts Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard were pretty good. Since are really friends, they had a good chemistry.

They could have killed the numerous moments at the Soul Train scramble board. Once at the board for nostalgias sake would have been enough.

The Toni Braxton/Tre Songz performance was actually pretty decent. The infamous kiss was not as bad as it looked from the still shots that were out there. It was quick and in the middle of the song. However, I still am not in favor of tonguing another man down as your husband sits in the audience. I know it was for the effect, but maybe that's me.

The tribute to Charlie Wilson- I didn't see every moment, but what I saw was BAD on every level. The vocals were messy. I know Uncle Charlie was like, "please, stop".

Raheem DeVaughn and Ludacris killed it with their performance of "Bulletproof". Yes, I already liked the song, but DeVaughn also sounded good live, which we love, and Ludacris brought it as usual.

Robin Thicke was really good with 'Sex Therapy'. You know when Robin sings live, sometimes its good, sometimes not so much. This was a good night.

Ryan Leslie- Really like his song, " You're Not My Girl" . Did pretty well, but just short.

Mario and Sean Garrett- Seriously, they gave him about a minute. Not much to say.

Chrisette Michele- Classic Chrisette live.

The Tribute to Chaka- this was the show closer. These tributes are always tough because the tributers can never match the tributee in vocal or range. And when you are talking about Chaka Khan....you know the deal. However, the ladies did a pretty good job, well mostly.

I came in the middle of Erykah Badu singing 'Stay'- Badu had already recorded this, and she pretty much sounded like the record. Badu was on point. And I actually loved her "Pocahontas" look.

Ledisi - Can you really go wrong with Ledisi? Performing "Through the Fire", Ledisi is one of the few women who can do Chaka justice vocally. Though not her personal best as she sounded a bit hoarse,she generally did her thing, as usual.

Fantasia- Why 'Tasia why? Why must you holler? It irks me to no end that Fantasia can actually sing, but chooses to holler in EVERY live performance. She did 'Tell Me Something Good', which could have been good, had she just sang it. Some people loved it. Me, not so much.

Angie Stone-Sang 'Aint Nobody'. Angie did a respectable job, but I think was a bit overwhelmed that she was singing to one of her idols. We all know she can sing. She actually gave the mike to Chaka at one point to sing. Chaka reluctantly took the mic, sang a bit and gave it back. But when Angie pretty much insisted, Chaka BLEW so effortlessly, it was a shame. Perhaps Angie shouldn't have handed over the mike. What do you do after Chaka blows you out?

On this Music/Thanksgiving Thursday, I am giving you a mini-review of hot CD, "Pink Elephant". Enjoy and have a great Thanksgiving holiday. See you next week.

Soul singer N’Dambi brings the heat with Pink Elephant, her 4TH CD release, and Stax Records debut. On Pink Elephant, N’Dambi lays her smooth vocals over easy beats, and leaves you feeling good. “Pink Elephant” gives a nod to old school sound, but keeps it sounding fresh. Even better, N’Dambi is a skillful songwriter and gives us songs that tell a story. On the lead single, “Can’t Hardly Wait”, N’Dambi sings about her lover, “I can’t hardly wait to be through with you”, even she can seem to get over him. Relatable? Absolutely. On the clever and oh- so- smooth, “L.I.E”., she sings of a married man’s double life as he travels across the Long Island Expressway (LIE) to meet his lover. With its groovy bass line and “supporting-my-man” theme, “What It Takes” begs you to sing along. The 80’s flavored, “Nobody Jones” is a great story of a woman who won’t let her surroundings keep her down. For jazz lovers, check out “Imitator”, a quirkily off-kilter little tune. Other hot cuts include the sexy slow jam, “Ooh Baby”, the breezy, “Mind-Blowin” and “The One” and “Take It Out”.

Alicia Keys Launches New Jewelry Line

R&B songstress Alicia Keys is the latest celebrity to throw her hat into the fashion ring with the launch of her new jewelry line, The Barber's Daughters. The new collection is founded with jewelry designer Gisele Theriault, and features pieces made of sterling silver and gemstones, inscribed with poetry and prayers. Music Thursday- Beyonce and Lady Gaga- Video Phone

Today I had planned to review soul singer N'Dambi's "Pink Elephant", however, with the dropping of Miss B's new video this week, I had to interrupt my plan to discuss her new video, " 'Video Phone'. N'Dambi will be featured next week. Now on to Beyonce...

Well, the musical stars aligned as two titans of radio play have collaborated for a much-anticipated new video, the remix of Beyonce's 'Video Phone'. The video features a scantily clad Beyonce in numerous skimpy outfits, with a quick guest spot by Lady Gaga, who has been stripped down, and as her "real self" is almost unrecognizable. We all know Miss Gaga is known for her outrageous outfits, and here she is well, really normal. Finally, the two perform choreography in matching white bathing suits.

I am a Beyonce fan. I should say that first. I think B is extremely talented, and is one of the best entertainers out right now. And really, she didn't need a collabo, but since Lady G is hot right now, I'm sure she figured, I rather join than compete. I can dig it. I think Gaga is fierce, so I can't blame B for wanting to hook up. I am not so sure what Gaga really got out of it though. She became Gaga Lite, because she didn't want to "compete" or upstage B in her own video. I can respect that. Gaga is very secure is her fabulousness, and performed like a trooper. But Gaga is a dynamo, and can't really be bottled up, or else the final product suffers.
But here is my real beef..
There is a very short walk from sexy street to slutty ave., and B has been straddling the fence for some time, without formally crossing over to the dark side. However, I think she has finally crossed the raunchy line. The video, while colorful and visually interesting, is nothing but B gyrating in half-naked outfits. And not just her usual gyrations, but really hypersexualized.
What is going on, B?? I mean really. I know sex sells, but are there no limits? I know she's a grown woman, and her audience is no longer little kids, but this in my opinion is a bit ridiculous.---
And can we change up the outfits? How many one-piece/bathing suits can we pull off? Yes, her body is sick, and I'm not hating. She should accentuate her positives. But she is not the only woman with a great body, (i.e. Mary J. Blige). Further, I think B has really benefited because she has gotten a virtual pass for her behavior. Other artists, (think Mrs. Aguilera in her heyday) have been drug through the mud for too tight/short clothing, or simulated sex in videos. Is the current Beyonce really that much different?

Also, as a lover of music and video, B really needs to get a bit more creative with the videos. She has really overworked the "B in leotards with 2 backup dancers" routine. Single Ladies was great. But Single Ladies times three is a bit much. Can we get a story, a concept, a plot?

I say this in love, because I am a fan, I like her and have bought her music. Whether she wants to acknowledge it or not, she does have young fans, (even teens are getting too young for this) and I wish she would just tone it down a bit.

Precious- The ATF Review

Well, normally this would be Beauty Monday, but I have no new beauty news or reviews. I am soooo behind on reviews. So, today will be 'Movie Monday' as Friday night I saw the much discussed, much lauded, and yes, much reviewed "Precious" directed by Lee Daniels. I debated seeing this on a Friday night, because I like you, had heard about how serious and disturbing this movie would be. Lord knows, the last thing I need on a Friday night is to be depressed. Well, I bit the bullet, and I'm glad I did.

'Precious' is the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones, a 16 year-old severely overweight, illiterate teenager who is pregnant for the second time from her now-absent father. Yes, it is at times brutal, and hard to watch, but please don't be deterred from seeing this movie. Precious is a riveting, well-made movie with a compelling plot and first-rate performances.

It's hard to believe this is a debut performance from Gabourey Sidibe who is fantastic as Precious. She effectively captures the pain, lack of esteem, and eventual resolve of her character, and should definitely make the "one to watch" list. Supporting performances from Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey and the stunning Paula Patton are all noteworthy. These are roles unlike what we've from Carey and Patton respectively, and they performed beautifully. However, Monique, starring as Precious' mother is mesmerizing. The hype is true. She kills this role with a performance that is as nuanced as you'd find from a veteran actress. It really is something to see.

If I had one complaint about this movie, it would be the questionable colorization of the casting. Specifically, the title character and her parents who had serious problems were dark-skinned, while the more redemptive, positive characters, (Kravitz, Carey, and Patton) are very fair skinned. With the history of light vs. dark skinned bias and stereotypes, it's surprising that someone in charge did not consider this more carefully. Indeed, other reviewers were disturbed by this aspect of casting as well. (Mediatakeout.com made this a non-recommend based on this fact).

However, the movie is strong enough that I would still recommend it. At a time when there are a lack of serious roles for Black actors/actresses to showcase their talents, 'Precious' is a welcome change. I know this movie is still in limited theatres, (I don't know why they thought this slow rollout was a good idea), but if it's in your area, check out Precious.

Music Thursday- Melanie Fiona's The Bridge

Melanie Fiona’s, The Bridge is probably not what you think it is. If you’ve heard Ms. Fiona’s breakout single, the sassy “Give It to Me Right”, or her current radio hit “It Kills Me”, you are probably expecting a very current R&B sound. Well, you’d be right, and wrong. While the aforementioned songs, along with a few Caribbean flavored ones, are very "now", a good deal of the CD is dedicated to a more old school 60’s and 70’s sound. And guess what? It works. “The Bridge” clearly aims to “bridge” (pun intended) old and new school sounds in a fresh new way. Tracks such as “Bang Bang”, a very 70’s Austin Powers-like fun and funky cut, and “Monday Morning”, a song that the Supremes would be proud of, make you want to break out your swing skirt. Fiona also gives a nod to the 60’s with the upbeat “Please Don’t Go (Cry Baby)”, and “You Stop My Heart,” a track really takes you back, and feels as though Fiona is singing live from the studio with full instrumentation. It is truly beautiful, vocally and musically. “Walk on By” pays tribute to classic sound, but keeps the its subject matter relevant to today’s audience with lyrics such as “I’m gone make it hell in your life….Fool me once, but you won’t fool me twice, Don’t say sssh, just walk on by.” In general, the CD’s 60’s references are very reminiscent of Raphael Saadiq’s latest work, or Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black. Admittedly, Fiona lacks the vocal heft of Ms. Winehouse, but does indeed do a fine job.

For those who prefer a more updated sound, you will love “Ay Yo”, a reggae tinged anthem that masterfully exemplifies Fiona’s Caribbean roots, and celebrates living life to the fullest. And of course, there is “It Kills Me”, a song that while a bit lyrically sparse, hits the right note. Its relatability, and Fiona’s raw emotion make it an undeniable winner.

The Bridge is a great debut CD from a promising young artist. While some may find the song selections to be a bit schizophrenic, they do work together to make a rather enjoyable CD, and one that you’d be glad to have in your collection.

I just returned from a GREAT trip to Nassau for their 2nd Annual Islands of the World Fashion Week. I was covering it for N'Digo newspaper here in Chicago. As soon as I am able, I will give you all of the juicy details. On another note, today is my birthday, and after getting in pretty late last night, I am going to take one more day off. Michael Jackson's This Is It

On Friday, I asked if you were going to see Michael Jackson's "This Is It" during its' limited two-week run. Well, as I suspected, it turns out that the two-week run has been extended and is expected to run through the Thanksgiving Holiday. I went to see it on Friday, and it is definitely worth a viewing. I must say that it wasn't quite as good as I expected it to be, but satisfying nonetheless. The movie gave a real behind-the-scenes look at Michael's upcoming London tour. From the dancers to the musicians to Kenny Ortega, the crew really gave their heart and soul to the concert, and to Michael. It really is something to see. And not unlike what we have come to expect from Michael, the concert was clearly going to be a tutorial on how to "come high or stay at home". Michael was all about excellence, and it is evident that this concert would be unlike anything most people have ever seen. More impressively, the viewer had the rare opportunity to see Michael not just as performer, but as maestro and creator. Michael didn't just play music. Michael WAS music. Plain and simple. His command of all things musical has been seen over and over again, but it was particularly interesting in this setting. And his vocals were incredibly in tact. It was a bit sad to see what was, and what could have been, but if you are a MJ fan, you will likely enjoy Michael Jackson's This Is It.

Are you gaga for Gaga?

I am surprised that as much as I talk fashion, that I have not discussed supreme it-girl Lady Gaga. Seriously, with the exception of maybe Rihanna, no one gets more coverage than Gaga for her jaw dropping creations. What do you think of Lady Gaga's style? Is she serving up over-the top fabness, or over-the top fooletry? What say you?

Finally, this is completely irrelevant to anything, but this weekend, I somehow ended up re-watching Cadillac Records. (You know cable TV plays reruns ad nauseum). Anyhoo, can I just say that I love me some Columbus Short? Good lawd! Even as a good-tooth wearing "Little Walter", he was sexy. When he sang "My Babe", and in his real voice, mmmh! Too bad he really is short is real life. In any case, he is fiiine and seriously talented. His new movie, "Armored" is slated to be hit the theatres next month.

"The Real Housewives of Atlanta"

So did you see the Reunion show for Real Housewives of Atlanta? Wow. You could cut the tension with a knife. Everyone looked moody, and no one wanted to talk. The point?? I mean really. I think the ladies wanted to make sure they didn't look crazy and "act a fool", like they did last season. I can respect that. However, there is no point in having a show if no one wants to talk. Also, can I say that I have a new respect for Kandi? She's the only one who really has her own money, and she is the most level headed. It's quite refreshing. Well, part 2 comes next week and Kim is performing her "Tardy for the Party". I'm sure the other girls will be throwing her some serious shade.

"This Is It"

Have you seen the new Michael Jackson flick? I know its only been out for 2 days, but that is long enough for some diehards to have made it to the show. The more I see the footage and hear the reviews, the more I want to see it. With only 2 weeks to catch it (allegedly), we've got to get their soon. Somehow I suspect that with all the money that will be made, that film will manage to get extended. Will you be watching?

"America's Next Top Model's" Biracial Photo Shoot

I haven't watched ANTM in years, but came across this photo from the show. Apparently Miss Tyra thought it would be edgy to have the models portray other races by changing their complexions. What is up with people lately? A couple of months ago French Vogue had a white model in blackface, and Tyra now has everyone in paint. When did this become acceptable? Did I not get the memo? Note: People can we stop with the ethnic paint? I could say a whole lot more about this but it would be a dissertation and not just a blog post, so I will stop here.

Must See TV- NBC's The Office

Now I know many of you are thinking, "This show has been on for years". And yes, I know that. However, this is for those who may not be watching. NBC's "The Office" has been funny for years, but this season, has been a must see. It is HANDS DOWN- one of the funniest shows on TV. What makes The Office so special is its originality. The characters, the camera close-ups, all of the nuances make it hilarious. I mean I actually laugh out loud. In my opinion, it is much funnier than 30 Rock, which has won the Emmy for comedy for the last umpteen years. I think this season "The Office" is really trying to give "30 Rock" a run for its' money.

Kiddie Couture/Stella McCartney for Baby Gap

Ever since the birth of my adorable neice Nylah 5 months ago, I've not been able to stop myself from wandering over to the baby clothing section. (She's my first niece. Yaay!!) I'm like Pookie in New Jack City, "It be calling me!!" To say that kid's clothing has come a long way since I was a tot is a HUGE understatement. I distinctly remember baby basics like Garanimals, and my favorite Osh Kosh B' Gosh. Well Osh Kosh is thankfully still around, but there is sooo much variety. Seriously, you don't want to go overboard on expensive clothes that babies can only wear for five minutes, but for those who love fashion, it can be hard to resist. Luckily for me (the currently financially challenged) Target, Carson Pirie Scott, and Kohl's offers loads of affordable finds. And yes, I did splurge once at Janie and Jack for a fabulous little pink tweed pageboy hat. I know. I know. I had to.

Well, now designer Stella McCartney is launching her kid's collection for GAP, which hits select stores on Nov. 2 in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France and Japan. The collection is geared for newborns - kids 12 years old, and will feature lots of natural fibers to make the kiddies more comfortable. The line will be a mix of practical wears like wool peacoats and organic cotton jeans, and wee versions of her adult ready-to-wear collection. The kids in Stella McCartney ready-to-wear? Watch out, world! On a personal note, I hope she keeps it age appropriate. I think 5 years olds should look like little kids, not mini versions of their mothers. I'm just saying.

Anyhoo, prices range from $14 for wool tights to $128 for a finely detailed military jacket.

(I must interject again, but is it me, or is $14 for kiddie tights a bit on the expensive side? Once again, I'm just saying).

Greetings fabulous ones,

Like many bloggers, we sometimes have to take a break for whatever reason. The last couple of months have been very busy and I need to regroup. So, I'm taking a few days off. No worries, I will be back next week. So, I guess that isn't really a big break. Let's call it a long weekend. As my "weekend" begins today , today's blog is short.

It also happens to be Music Thursday. Since I haven't gotten my hands on any new good music this week, I will share a bit of music news and my "hot single" pick.

1) Meshell N'degeocello dropped a new disc this week, "Devil's Halo". I have not yet gotten my hands on the CD, but hope to really soon, and if it's hot, you will be hearing about it. (I'm a long time N'degeocello fan).

2) For all you Adam Lambert fans (American Idol runner-up), Mr. Lambert will be dropping his debut CD November 23. The hot news though, is that he just recorded a song with Lady Gaga. I can't wait to hear that one.

3) Hot artist Melanie Fiona's new album "The Bridge" dropped on I-Tunes this week. The CD officially drops on Nov. 10. I will admit I'm old school, and am not into downloading whole CD's on my MP3 player. I may put a song or two, but for whole discs I still buy CD's. I know. I'm a dinosaur. I guess I would call myself a collector. Anyhoo, if you want to purchase now, it's available on I-Tunes for $5.99.

4) Rihanna's new single "Russian Roulette" was debuted this week. Have you heard it? What do you think? I'm just glad she is getting back to making music. Dont get me wrong. I love her style, but it was time to her to get back to the music, instead of just being photographed by paparazzi. It was starting to feel a bit contrived.

Since I don't have a CD to review this week, I am giving my hot single pick. And it may be a surprise to some of you who follow me regularly since I have typically covered R&B, or neo-soul music. It's "Uprising" by MUSE. The video has a whole cheesy 80's thing going, but I'm diggin' the song. I told you I liked ALL kinds of music.

LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's

Hola my lovelies,

So I'm sure many of you are familiar with Lauren Conrad, aka LC from the Hills. Then you probably also know about her design aspirations. Initially she launched a clothing line named Lauren Conrad Collection. However, that bit the dust, conceivably due to an exorbitant price point for her target audience. And frankly the line was particularly underwhelming. Now, she's back with her new line for Kohl's department stores called "LC Lauren Conrad". This line features much more reasonably priced items topping out at about $60. Now, I have never understood the hype surrounding Ms. Conrad and her "style". I think she's worn some cute things, but I don't see why she is being anointed as a style star or some sort of uber-fashionista. Anyhoo, here's a look at her new line for Kohl's, LC Lauren Conrad.

Well you know I love fashion, and am always interested in what's hot and fresh. Well, imagine my surprise when I learned that none other than Lindsay Lohan was christened as "Artistic Advisor" for the house of Ungaro. She is in charge with working with Ungaro's new chief designer. Mmmph. Now, when I think of haute couture, or high fashion, Lindsay Lohan does NOT come to mind. The pair recently collaborated on Ungaro's summer/spring 2010 collection that showed during Paris' fashion week and the results were well... Let's just say the critics were NOT pleased. Shreiks and wails could be heard from across the world. You be the judge...

Music Thursday

Well, after a couple of delays, Mariah Carey's new CD, Diary of an Imperfect Angel dropped this week. I have not heard the CD in its entirety, but have heard a preview, and it sounds a bit sleepy. What I have heard in its entirety is her new single, a remake of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is". If that is any indication of what is on the rest of the CD, I am in no hurry to purchase it. Yes, it's true that many (especially critics) regard, "I Want to Know What Love Is" as an over-the-top, somewhat cheesy 80's power ballad. Nonetheless, it was a classic, over-the-top cheesy power ballad and if you are going to remake it, please do it right. The original was sung with power and emotion. The light and airy version that Mariah does not do the song justice. The first time I heard it I was driving with my friend, and we both were like, "what the ..." "What is this whispery mess? "Love you Mariah, but NOT FEELING the remake. Have you heard the CD? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Song that I am feeling right now...

Letoya Luckett's "Regret"- I first must acknowledge that I am a little mad that the beat of this song so closely resemble's Mary Mary's "God In Me". Artists, please make sure your producer didn't sell your beat to everyone and their mama. That clearly seems to be the case here. But, that aside, I am really diggin this track right now. For those of you who are wondering, how could I diss a Mariah, a give love to a Letoya, its because Letoya is what she is. She not's a big singer, but doesn't pretend to be. The song is hot, and has much attitude. I personally LOVE big singers, and I think Mariah is capable of better than what she's giving right now. That said, check out the song "Regret". MUST-SEE TV

The fall TV season is now upon us. With so many good shows, it's hard to pick which one's to watch. They are a few on my list, but today I am picking out two new shows that definitely make the cut: CBS's The Good Wife and NBC's Trauma. Check them out.

The Good Wife- CBS

We’ve all seen it. The politician husband and his scorned wife taking the proverbial "walk of shame" to the podium. He announces that he’s had an affair, with his wife standing by silent and humiliated. We are all witness to the aftermath of the husband, but what happens to the wife? Well, CBS hones in on that idea, bringing to the masses: “The Good Wife” featuring Julianna Marguiles as Alicia Florrick, wife of Peter Florrick, the cheating husband, and politician convicted of corruption. We see Florrick as she faces the embarrassment of her husband’s public affair, and how she must pick up the pieces and support her family in light of her husband’s imprisonment. In a not-so-uncommon scenario, Florrick has seemingly put her previous career as a promising attorney on hold in support her husband’s career. Now she returns to the courtroom at a prominent law firm in need of salvaging her family and her reputation. It appears her husband’s conviction is up for appeal, and could possibly be overturned. But does she want him back?
The Good Wife is reminiscent of some of the good old school court shows but with a modern twist. The casting works, and if the first episode is any indication, so will the storylines. It also has a first-rate producer in Ridley Scott. Yes, Ridley Scott of Gladiator fame. I am definitely feeling this show. (It even got my mom’s seal of approval, and she is not easy to please.
Check out The Good Wife on CBS, tonight (Tuesday) at 8 pm.

Trauma- NBC

The pilot to Trauma aired last night to much hype. I’m glad to say it was worth it. With action-packed sequences resembling a Jerry Bruckheimer film, Trauma at times feels like a Hollywood movie, rather than a prime-time TV show. It’s clear that the money NBC saved by airing Jay Leno at 9pm Central, was reallocated for this show. It’s big-budget that works because it actually has a storyline. Think “ER” with lots of action, and the talented Derek Luke. One other distinction is that unlike “ER”, it’s a drama that is told from the eyes of the paramedic worker, rather than the doctors and nurses. It’s rare and pretty darn interesting.

Beauty Monday- Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish

So, if you’ve been following this blog, you’ll know that I often review beauty products that are pretty budget friendly. I’ll buy a good drug store brand as quickly as I’ll pick up something from the department store (MAC, etc). (Actually I buy drug store more often, but anyhoo…). Today I am breaking from tradition. For years, I have had Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish on my wish list, but since it has always been on the expensive side, I never purchased it. However, listening its fans oohs, aahs and seeing the figurative clutching of pearls, I knew eventually I would find a way to get Brown Sugar Body Polish in my clutches. Well, I have and am bringing you the review…

Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish is FABULOUS. For you ingredient conscious consumers, Fresh is made of brown sugar (of course)drenched in skin-loving oils, including primrose, sweet almond, apricot kernel, jojoba, and sunflower seed. The result is wondrously soft skin that glows. My skin was so luminous that I wondered if I needed lotion. In fair disclosure, my skin was already pretty soft, but body polish made it feel like butter. It really feels decadent. The product also claims to brighten and tone skin. I haven’t used it long enough to attest to that, but as far as its claim to leave skin “polished, nourished and glowing”, I can with certainty that it does what it says. What’s also great about this product is that since its sugar based, it doesn’t sting after shaving, like some salt based products. Now for the price …$65 for a 14.1 oz. As I mentioned, pricey. I would definitely recommend this product if 1) You want a splurge, and don’t care about price, 2) Are prone to really dry skin. 3) Enjoy products that contain mostly natural ingredients. If your skin is already soft, you can get an effective scrub for less money. (I’ve reviewed a few on this blog). But if you want a special treat, or want something for those nights on the town… you would love Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish.

Beauty Monday- Top Beauty Foods

Usually when we cover beauty, it's in the form of a product review, i.e the latest lipstick, hot body scrub, etc. And of course, we will continue to do that. However, beauty isn't just about the fabulous creams and potions we use. It's also about what we put in our bodies. Admittedly I could use a little help in this area. No one loves a good burger and fries more than I do. (And I really do mean that). However, neither of which is particularly good for you, and they certainly don't add anything to our beauty bottom line. The good news is that there are lots of foods that do aid our quest for beauty, and are actually healthy. According to nutritionist and registered dietician Lisa Drayer, the top 10 beauty foods are as follows:

(FYI- Many of these foods are included on multiple health benefit lists)
1. Wild salmon: A primo source for omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce skin inflammation, preventing redness, wrinkles, and loss of firmness. It’s also potent in antioxidants and vitamins B and D.

2. Low-fat yogurt: In one word, calcium. Good for strong bones, nails, and teeth. One cup of plain low-fat yogurt has more calcium than a glass of skim milk.

3. Oysters: The best source of zinc, period. Zinc helps build collagen, which supports the structure of skin and speeds up renewal and repair.

4. Blueberries: Full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories that prevent long-term cell damage.
5. Kiwifruit: Another good source of antioxidants, kiwis are also a great source of vitamin C and potassium, all which help prevent wrinkles.

6. Sweet potatoes: Chock-full of beta-carotene, something the body converts to vitamin A, which keeps skin smooth and is thought to protect against sun damage.

7. Spinach: This nutrient-dense leafy green is a great source of beta-carotene and lutein, which protects the eyes.

8. Tomatoes: Perhaps the only vegetable best eaten processed. Tomatoes are a major source of lycopene, a potent antioxidant also thought to protect against sunburn.

9. Walnuts: A key source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. The omega-3s found in walnuts also help fight against skin ailments like psoriasis and eczema.

10. Dark chocolate: Full of antioxidants and nutrients, cocoa (choose chocolate with at least 60 percent cocoa) increases blood flow to the skin, which in turn boosts hydration, smoothness, and protection against sun exposure.

Today, we are excited to begin our “What’s Hot” series; a monthly segment dedicated to local talent that deserves recognition. We are pleased to jumpstart the series with the co-owner of one of Chicagoland’s fast-rising design companies specializing in jewelry, handbags, accessories and clothing. Pretty Afrika Designs has been featured in several Chicago publications including the Chicago Sun-Times, and Time Out Chicago, and today we are speaking with one of the co-owners, Sandra Enimil. Together with her mother Madam Teresa Oberg Sam, they make handmade creations that are Africa-inspired. In addition to Enimil’s role as business owner, she also works full-time as a lawyer. We’re glad she’s taken a little time out to talk to All Things Fantabulous.

ATF: How/when did Pretty Afrika get started?
Sandra: I’ve always been a fashionable person. In high school I made jewelry and outfits. My mom would sew and always make clothes. Years later, after school, (college, law school, etc), my mom asked me if I would consider making jewelry again. She (mom) already had a company making handbags, quilts etc. I started making a few pieces of jewelry and people would ask where I got them and if I could make one for them. I started taking special orders. One day the name Pretty Afrika came to me, and we decided to combine my mom’s company which was Nubian Creations, and put everything under one name.

ATF: What is the inspiration for your designs? I understand you got inspired while living and going to school in Ghana for your masters degree.
Sandra: Yes, when I lived in Ghana we would go to the bead markets. I bought tons and tons of beads that I brought back home. It was a while before I actually used them. But really I am inspired by different things. It could be anything. It could be the color of your sweater. It’s actually random. I may have an idea, and do different variations of it. We do use a lot of bright colors.

ATF: Are there materials that you favor when making your designs?
Sandra: I like to use clay, wood and semi precious stones. I sometimes use resin, put I prefer woods and stones, basically natural materials.

ATF: Considering that you work full time as a lawyer, how do you manage running a business and working full-time?
Sandra: Fortunately, most events, (shows we do, etc) take place on weekends and evenings, so it works pretty well.

ATF: What are your future plans for Pretty Afrika?
Sandra: I’d like to get into more stores, including locations outside of Chicago. It’s a little difficult doing that now with a recession. Stores are more apt to work on a consignment basis, rather than buying product outright.

ATF: Where can your designs be found?

ATF: What advice would you give to others who want to start their own business?
Sandra: It’s good to find something you’re good at and be passionate about it. Know what’s out there. Make sure your product stands out. Try not to duplicate what someone else is doing. Do things to the best of your ability. Make sure you have good quality control.

New Feature Coming

This segment is to promote local talent (artists, retailers, etc) that deserve some recognition. This will be a monthly feature, and the first segment begins this Friday. The good thing is that although the finds are local, their product can be purchased, heard, etc. online. So, it's a win for everyone. Off my chest Monday

Hola my peeps,

Well, I planned to start a new segment today called Beauty Mondays, but I will be postponing it until next Monday. Typically I do my beauty segments on Mondays anyway, but now I am making it official. Instead, because it is fresh on my mind, I need to vent a bit about rudeness, triflin'ness, and all around lack of respect. Two things that happened this weekend that sparked my need to get this off my chest. First, I did something I don't normally do. I went to the movies on an opening weekend. Yes, I went to see the new Tyler Perry movie. This is the first time I saw a Tyler Perry movie on an opening weekend, and it may just be the last. I went to the 5:30 show, so I figured it was a good time before all the crowds really started to build. Well, unfortunately, that was not enough the ignorant chatterboxes from showing up. Riddle me this: Why do people pay $1o to go to a movie and talk through it? I simply do not understand it. Clearly the chicks who were yapping away like baby yorkies had gotten on more than a few peoples nerves, because this then led to a squabble with other annoyed patrons which got more than a wee bit loud. Fortunately, this foolishness did eventually did quiet down, but not before I missed part of what was going on in the movie. Additionally, for some reason some new school Bebe's kids were running and yelling down the steps in the theatre. Where are there mamas?? And let me not forget the chick sitting two seats down who was texting through part of the movie; which wouldn't have bothered me if it weren't for the light coming from her phone. Why people, WHY? I know that ignorance has gone on in many a movie theatre over many years, but I think it's just sad that people have no respect for others. WHY? I should mention that I did enjoy the movie.
And continuing on the theme of lack of respect for others, I come to the second topic to vent about- the ever-ridiculous Kanye West. Yes! Just when you think that Kanye can't do anything to outdo himself, he manages to reach new lows. Well, I think he has officially reached the point of no return. ---So I am sitting here watching the MTV Video Awards, and Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video award over Beyonce and a few other ladies, (Pink, Lady Gaga, etc). Well, as Swift was giving her speech, out of nowhere comes Kanye West, who grabbed the mic, interrupted her speech and proceeding to go into a tirade on how Beyonce had the best video (and basically should have won). It was so outrageoues, At first I thought it might be a joke. It quickly became clear after the cameras panned to a stunned Beyonce and a speechless Swift that it wasn't a joke. The crowd rightfully booed Kanye off the stage. Swift didn't finish her speech. Again, WHY? Why does Kanye continue these shenanigans? He is a grown a-- man! Why would he go onstage and ruin the moment of a 19-year old girl , who by the way had never won before. His level of arrogance knows NO bounds. It was bad enough the last few times he did this, but at least he was protesting his own category. Now he's ambushing the stage for the female categories? What is wrong with this dude? More importantly, when is MTV, and specifically Viacom, going to grow a pair and say ENOUGH! How many moments does he have to ruin? How many people does he have to humiliate before he gets banned? Ok, that sounded a little dramatic. But seriously, there need to be consequences for his actions. It's not enough to just laugh it off and say that "that's just Kanye". This time, payment should be swift and decisive. We'll see what happens.

Ann Taylor Reinvents Itself

If you’ve turned on the tube, or flipped through your favorite fashion magazine lately, you’ve probably heard that Ann Taylor has reinvented itself. Traditionally known as a prime destination for work wear, replete with classic silhouettes and conservative color options, Ann Taylor is amping up its product line with a broader range of fabric options, more frills and bolder hues. Its new slogan is “The New Ann… we’re tired of being all work, no play. We’re ready to change into something more beautiful". They’ve even upgraded their website to a look that’s more chic. I must say, I think the new collection is quite cute. What’s not so cute however, is the price. If you’re familiar with Ann Taylor pre-reinvention, you will definitely notice that these new styles come with a heftier price tag. (And it wasn't cheap to begin with). Beauty Review- Kiehl's Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub "Grapefruit"

Hola and welcome back from a long weekend. Hope it was fantabulous! Weather in Chicago was incredible. Well, it’s been a minute since I’ve done a beauty review so without further ado.

Kiehl’s Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub- “Grapefruit”- Made with Aloe Vera and Chamomile
First, I love the scent. I’m not generally drawn to fruity body products, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like a grapefruit smell. However, to my pleasure, the grapefruit scent is very light. If gives the nose a little tingle, without being overwhelming. Also, unlike many body scrubs which are liquid-based, Kiehl’s creamy texture is surprisingly enjoyable. It spreads on easily, and its scrubbing particles have a bit of weight to them, which at first contact may feel a bit rough, but once worked in, really feels like it’s getting the job done. It’s hefty without being harsh. Most importantly, this scrub is effective. It rinses off the skin easily, and leaves it soft and smooth. This isn’t so much a pamper-me type of scrub like say, Carol’s Daughter’s Almond Cookie, but if you need to get it done quickly and effectively, Kiehl’s is a great go to. Whitney Houston is back, well sort of

Unless you’ve literally been under a rock, by now you are aware that after a 7 year hiatus from the music biz, the grand diva, Whitney Houston has returned. Now, I have good news and bad news. Let’s go with the good news first.

First, Whitney is back and looking fabulous. She appears happy and so much healthier than she has in years. (I am sure we all recall our collective shock and heartbreak when a skeletal –looking Whitney took the stage at the Michael Jackson tribute concert in 2001. Many of us wondered if she’d ever recover). Expertly styled and radiantly glowing on her TV appearance on this past Tuesday, Whitney simply seemed well, and I for one am glad to see it. Also, in the good news category is the fact that Whitney’s new CD release, “I Look to You” is a solid effort. It’s well produced and its music is perfectly tailored to Houston’s current vocal capabilities. “I Look to You” adeptly blends uptempo dance tracks with midrange ballads to provide a very pleasant listening experience. Singles such as “Million Dollar Bill”, “Call You Tonight”, and “I Got You” and “For the Lovers” are catchy and modern without trying too hard. And while not of vintage Whitney status, current radio single “I Look to You” and “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength, are both respectable ballads that effectively illuminate the chanteuse’s former troubles. Vocally, Whitney exhibits that she still has skills, diminished skills, but skills nonetheless. She can still out sing many current radio stars, and considering what we have seen of her over the years, she’s better than expected; at least on wax. Where the disc could be improved is in its lyrics. We know that Ms. Houston is trying to remain relevant in a new musical era, but phrases such as “You think your s--- don’t stink. What It Do?” as found in the disc’s last single, “Salute”, or her shouting out “her crew”, makes one pause and think, “Really? You’re 47”. It seems a bit foolish. Considering the story that Whitney has to tell, the writers could have provided her with a bit more substantive material. Overall, however, “I Look to You” really is an honorable return to the music scene.

And now for the bad news….
We all must come to terms with the fact that Whitney as we knew her is gone. The women who made the hairs on our neck stand up with every chart topping ballad is no more. If there were any lingering doubt, watching Whitney’s live performance this week on Good Morning America ended it. It was painful, embarrassing even. She was often out of breath, hoarse, and unable to carry the notes. The audience was basically forced to sing half of the songs, because she was unable to. If the crowd wasn’t so loving and generous, it would have been an utter disaster. (And it was darn close). The voice you hear on the CD was nowhere to be found on Tuesday’s performance. She stated that she had been talking too much due to her Oprah interview, and I’m sure that was a factor. But, it is quite clear that Whitney has a LOT of work to do if she plans to perform live again. (Reports are that she is not touring, so she may be on the same page). I am a Whitney fan, and I am rooting for her. However, I think she still has quite a bit of diva left, in her and she needs to get really humble, really quickly. No one should expect her to gravel; but she has to acknowledge that she is not the singer she once was and has give her full effort. Period. She needs to put in work like P. Diddy’s protégé’s on Making the Band; walking for cheesecakes and all. That’s how serious it is, because unfortunately for her, Whitney Houston is competing against well, Whitney Houston. She has set the bar so high, that there is an unfair expectation every time she touches the mic. She doesn’t have to be the Whitney of old; she can’t. But she can be better than she was on Tuesday. Her CD proves the voice is still there. (Yes, with some studio help, but it’s there). She just has to get to work. I, for one, am rooting for her.

Fall Trends Part I

Tis’ my favorite time of the year (fashionwise, that is). Hooray for fall fashions. Those cozy sweaters, tweeds, and knee-length boots make my heart a-flutter. Well, there are so many trends this year that I can’t capture them all in one post. So, this is fall trends, PART 1. (You'll notice that Rihanna is in a number of these photos. What can I say, the girl rocks all the trends).

1) Rocker Chic- This one is unanimous. Every, and I mean every magazine, blogger, etc who covers fashion has listed rocker chic as one of the hottest trends for fall. To achieve the look: grab a funky leather jacket, fur vests, studded boots, metal chains all make the grade. Caution: This look must be played in an age-appropriate manner. All out rocker-chic, or biker glam as some call it, is fine in your 20’s, but once you add the decades, it’s best to pare the look down a bit.

2) 80’s Inspired style- Remember those puffy shoulder pads, acid washed jeans, and other tragic styles of the 80’s? They’re baaack. Yes, for those of you old enough to have lived through this the first time, congratulations; here’s a second helping of the styles you loved to hate. The puffy shoulder pads are now being called the “strong shoulder”, but it’s essentially the same. And I didn’t even mention the one trend I prayed would never return: neon. Yes, the mere mention of neon gave me heart palpitations. Fortunately, this time around neon is being used in smaller doses, and in a few less color choices. Think hot pink, not neon yellow.

3) Booties- Booties are again considered a must have for fall.

4) Ruching- The fashion world is all about draping this season. Designers are channeling our inner Grecian with ruching galore. This is admittedly not my favorite trend, but I just report the news.

White after Labor Day?

Here we are again. We only have a few days until Labor Day and are again faced with that age- old debate: Should one wear white after Labor Day? In recent years, the hard and fast rule against white after Labor Day has eased considerably. In fact, many fashion gurus encourage white fashions in the fall and winter. Now, we all know how fabulous white ensembles look on a cool summer night, with dewy face and polished open toes peeking from our most prized stilettos. Heck, Puffy's (or P Diddy's, or whatever he goes by these days) "white parties" have become the stuff of legend, almost single handedly upping his bourgeois quotient, and shall we say, crossover appeal. Considering all we know about how truly dazzling white can really be, it begs the question, why should we conform to the old fashion rules and stop wearing white after Labor Day?

Well, according to the experts we shouldn't. We just have to do it right.

The new rules on wearing white after Labor Day:

1) Fabric matters- Summer fabrics must go. (Think linen or anything breezy). This is unequivocal. However, classic winter fabrics: wool, cashmere, angora are acceptable and often quite chic. Also, it's probably a good idea to move away from the really bright white. Winter white is there for a reason.

2) White outerwear is HOT as long as you keep it clean- I can personally attest to this. I had a white puffer coat with a faux fur hood that was absolutely darling; that is until it got dirty. Afterwards, not so much. There's nothing worse than dirty white. White outerwear needs routine maintenance so plan accordingly. However, if you find the right white coat-- Magic.

3) Nix the head-to-toe- white ensembles- White, when worn in the fall or winter, should be paired with traditional fall/winter colors to create balance. Rich greens, ambers etc. are great for fall, and of course, black brings instant sophistication.

4) White denim is now "in" year round- I know this one may scratch a few heads, but many fashion experts dig white denim after September, particularly when paired with boots and a nice plush sweater.

5) For the love of GOD, NO white legwear- Okay this one's mine. I once heard someone say that only two kinds of people should wear white hosiery, that's little girls and nurses. Truer words have never been spoken. Sorry.

6) At the end of the day, its really up to you. My mantra is that it's all about personal style. (That is, unless you are thinking about wearing white shoes (shoes, not boots)). That's where we absolutely must draw the line. :)

GAP inc. New 1969 Premium Jeans Collection- The Review

This month, GAP Inc. introduced its’ 1969 Premium Jeans Collection, under the direction of GAP’s EVP of Design, the famed Patrick Robinson. With this collection, GAP Inc. aims to appeal to jean lovers who want high-end designer styled jeans without the upscale price tag. The GAP is hoping that the 1969 Premium Jeans collection will boost sagging sales, and a somewhat diminished cache. According to Robinson, this project was a year in the making.
So after much fanfare, I wanted to see what the fuss was about. Admittedly, I hadn’t shopped at the GAP in a while, but wondered if the new collection was worth the hype. (And if these jeans needed a spot in my closet).
Therefore, in the interest of journalism, I trekked to the GAP to seek out the 1969 Premium Jeans Collection, and here’s the deal:

The GAP will feature 6 “staple” styles (fits) each year: Always Skinny, Real Straight, Sexy Boot, Curvy, Perfect Boot and the Long and Lean. (If you think you remember seeing a few of these fits before, you have. These are just new and improved). In addition, each season, there will be a trendy feature style; for this fall that is the Boyfriend Jean. The jeans will also be available in a number of different rinses: dark, light, distressed, etc. Prices will peak at $70/pair.

The verdict:
The jean options are pretty impressive. The variety of washes is nice, and the details are respectable. However, if you’re hoping to get the details found on brands like say, True Religion, or Rock and Republic, you’ll probably be disappointed. You won’t find colored stitching, or buttoned back pockets. However, the GAP’s seriously reduced price tag will probably make you feel better. --I was most impressed by how comfortable the jeans are. I actually compared my old GAP jeans (which have been washed a hundred times) to the new 1969’s, and I can definitely say that there is a huge improvement in comfort. These jeans have been softened to perfection and do feel like some of their more expensive counterparts. I love, love, love how soft they are.

After trying on a few pairs: curvy, the perfect boot, and the boyfriend (just for kicks), I confirmed that the curvy was indeed the best pair for me. I typically have a problem with the waist/hip/thigh proportion and the jean did leave a little gap in the back. The fit was not perfect, but pretty good. Nevertheless, I was pleased enough to pick up a pair, especially since GAP is currently running an introductory special for $20 off.

I've been a wee bit in the dumps lately and could use some encouragement. I thought about the desk ornament my mom gave me years ago when I was going through a similarly tough time. Ledisi Unleashed- Ledisi "Turn Me Loose" CD Review

Blending R&B Soul, funk, blues and rock to dazzling effect, Ledisi brings the heat with “Turn Me Loose”, an ambitious follow up to her Grammy-nominated 2007 CD release “Lost and Found”. As good as “Lost and Found” was, if you are expecting “Lost and Found II”, this ain’t it. It’s clear that Ledisi changed directions to bring a CD that is bit edgier and more energetic than its’ predecessor.

Ledisi bursts out the gate with ‘Runnin’, a funktastic intro that gets your blood pumping and signals that Ledisi means business. She also channels her inner Tina Turner on the blazin’ ‘Knockin’, and her rollicking good remake of Buddy Miles’ ‘Them Changes’. --On the title track, ‘Turn Me Loose’, Ledisi offers a jazzy/blues vocal that even Chaka Khan would be proud of. She also keeps the old school inspiration going with the Raphael Saadiq produced ‘Love Never Changes’ , which grooves with a sound reminiscent of Motown days gone by. Don’t be fooled, though. Ledisi brings plenty of R&B goodness to sink your teeth into. ‘Say No’, ‘Everything Changes’, and ‘Goin' Thru Changes’ are all effective tracks that affirm Ledisi’s total versatility. She even brings a bit of reggae with the laid-back, yet sassy, ‘Trippin’.

As with any CD, “Turn Me Loose” is not flawless, but it’s darn good. Ledisi’s vocal prowess is almost unmatched and is alone worth the price of the CD. She has definitively proven that she is one of the “hottest chicks in the game”.

As a self-described HGTV lover, I am always looking at design ideas, even when I'm not actively in the buying market. One trend that has come on strong over the last couple of years is the use of wallpaper. Now, if images of Mr. Furley and Three's Company come to mind, don't fret. Wallpaper has come a long way over the years, and it's not your grandmother's wallpaper. Today's wallpaper can really give a room that POP you are looking for. If a room full of design makes you nervous, wallpaper also works great for an accent wall. Check out some of the newer, fresher trends in wallpaper.

Can It Be That It Was All So Simple Then? Friday Thought

So I was driving to my much needed brow wax appointment when one of my current favorite rock songs came on the radio: Shinedown’s “Second Chance”. As I cranked up the volume with windows down and moon roof open, a gentleman pulled up next to me in his pickup truck. Immediately I felt a bit self-conscious. I wondered what the guy was thinking as he was watching this Black chick on the South Side of Chicago thrusting her head to a rock song like ‘Second Chance’”. It’s not heavy metal, but still, it’s not exactly a typical scene. It reminded me of a time years ago when I went to a nearby Best Buy, in a mall that was heavily shopped by African Americans. The thing was, I was going to pick up the latest Britney Spears’ CD, “In the Zone”. (Yes, I did say Britney Spears. It was my first Britney CD, so cut me so slack. Also, keep in mind, this was Britney pre-meltdown). For a moment I thought about wearing a fabulous pair of shades and covering my head to maintain my anonymity. Fortunately, I realized this was ludicrous, and grabbed my Britney for all the world to see, or at least the ladies at the Best Buy checkout counter. And I don’t care what anyone says, that “In the Zone” CD was hot. The entire scenario however, made me think: Why did I care? I’ve spoken to others with similar experiences, so I know I’m not alone. When did this attitude begin? Well, in my non-professional opinion, it seemed to start in the mid-late 90’s. I say this because anyone who was a music-lover in the 80’s can tell you that everyone listened to pop music in the 80’s and most loved it. (Yes, I am dating myself). It didn’t matter what your ethnic, social or economic background was, you watched Friday Night Videos and MTV, and listened to Duran Duran and Culture Club, Michael Jackson and Prince. I think more than a few us sang “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins, or one of my 80’s faves, “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds, from the movie, the Breakfast Club. And who didn’t love Casey Kasem and the America’s Top 40 countdown? Unfortunately, as the years progressed, music seemed to become more categorized, and “segregated”. True, there had always been pop music, and R&B soul music, classical, etc. However, people seemed more unified in their listening preferences. You could listen to both Luther Vandross and Blondie and feel no shame. Nowadays, the Jay-Z listener, may also love Carrie Underwood, but they won’t admit it. Perhaps the change occurred when when Friday Night Videos left the airwaves, or Music Television (MTV) all but stopped playing music videos, the same videos that we all liked to watch. The record industry and radio certainly haven’t helped either. If you’re an artist that doesn’t fit into a nicely packaged box for marketing, good luck. It’s no wonder why many artists hate to be labeled, as though they can be only one thing. For the truly creative, such limitations can truly be a burden. Can’t the same be said for us? Aren’t we complex individuals with a wide range of likes and dislikes? Why should we be stifled?
Well, as for me, I won’t be ashamed to get my groove on, no matter who’s on the dial: with no fear, and no disguises. At least I’m working on it.

Celebrity stylist and general “it-girl” designer Rachel Roy has officially debuted her bridge line Rachel Rachel Roy for Macy’s in stores this week. The moderately-priced Rachel Rachel Roy collection features fashionable sportswear, footwear and accessories. Prices range from $40(jewelry) to $299(sportswear). Unfortunately, only eight pieces are currently available online at Macys.com.

Rachel Roy follows the increasingly long line of high-end designers who've created lower to moderately priced lines major retailers. (Think Matthew Williamson for H&M). For me, the verdict is out on Rachel Rachel Roy. I like a few of the pieces, but mmmh, not so sure. LOVE the boots, though.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

I’m not sure why I haven’t reviewed this product before now, but better late than never. This week’s health and beauty pick is CeraVe hydrating cleanser. I learned about CeraVe through my dermatologist when I had an annoying case of eczema. She suggested that I try a gentler body cleanser that didn’t irritate the skin. Well, it took a while before I actually bought it, by which time my eczema cleared up from a prescription I had. However, I did decide to buy it anyway and use it as a facial cleanser. (It can be used for the entire body). So, here’s the deal: I like it.

What the label claims:
· Helps restore and maintain the skin’s natural protective function
· Patented Multivesicular Emulsion (MVE) formulation
· Contains ceramides that moisturize and soften the skin
· Non-comedogenic and non-irritating (non-comedogenic = doesn’t block pores)
Well, I’m not a dermatologist, but CeraVe was developed with dermatologists, so I think that’s a good sign. Here’s what I can tell you in layman’s terms:

· CeraVe is a hydrating cleanser so my skin feels really nice after washing. My skin doesn’t feel dry or tight after use.
· I love the texture. It’s somewhere between a creme and a gel, and feels really good when being applied. I actually look forward to using it.
· CeraVe is very gentle, and the skin feels clean after use. I have normal skin, but I think this would be great for people with sensitive skin especially.
· My skin feels soft after use.

The only negative is that I wouldn’t necessarily CeraVe by itself as a makeup remover. It does remove most makeup, but I usually follow up with a cleansing towelette to remove the excess, especially if I am wearing foundation.

I purchased CeraVe at CVS pharmacy for about $12: not cheap, but not La Mer either. I think it’s worth it, and would definitely buy CeraVe again.

Fab Chica of the Week- Sonia Sotomayor

Yesterday, Second Circuit Appeals Court judge Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed as the first Hispanic Justice on the Supreme Court. She will also be only the third (3rd) woman to sit on the Supreme Court. Sotomayor has traveled a long road to reach this historic nomination. Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx and grew up in New York's public housing projects. She later graduated suma cum laude from Princeton University and went on to Yale Law school where she became editor of the Yale Law Journal. Sotomayor has worked at every level of the judicial system prior to being chosen by President Obama to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court. Over the weeks during the nomination process, she has in my opinion, endured some unfair criticism and inaccurate evaluations of her judicial record. However, Sotomayor has handled herself with grace and dignity and finally she has arrived. No matter how you feel about her politically, this is a true historic event for our country. Sotomayor is expected to be sworn in tomorrow.

I have been itching to bring you another fashion post, (it’s been a while), but unfortunately, there hasn’t much exciting to talk about in the fashion world. Well, unless you count the fact that Beyonce is launching the Sasha Fierce clothing line, but let's just say I'm not running to the stores for it. I'm just saying. This week, Vanity Fair magazine has released its 2009 picks for its International Best Dressed List. There are indeed the usual suspects, but there are also a few surprises. I certainly find a couple to be, shall we say, interesting. I am curious about what you think. It’s a long list, so I will just share a few of the highlights. RIP Naomi Sims- Fashion Icon

On a sad note, I must pay respect to a true fashion icon, Naomi Sims, who passed away this week from cancer at the age of 61. Naomi Sims is widely regarded as the first Black supermodel. Her appearance on the cover of Ladies’ Home Journal in November 1968 was a barrier breaker, as this marked the first time a Black model was featured on the cover of a mainstream women’s publication. Her Ladies’ Home Journal cover led to other prominent features such as the covers of Life and Cosmopolitan magazines respectively. Sims also began to work with top designers like Halston and Fernando Sanchez at a time when Black runway models were scarce. Her accomplishments opened the doors for future Black runway celebrities of the 1970’s Pat Cleveland and Beverly Johnson. When Naomi Sims retired from modeling, she went on to create a multi-million dollar wig-making business with styles that catered to Black women. Naomi Sims was a pioneer, a true success story, and someone to be admired. RIP Naomi Sims

The Importance of Vitamin D

Greetings my lovelies,

It’s a busy week for me, so please forgive me if the posts don’t come as frequently as usual. Please know that I will do my best. So, lately I have been seeing a lot of discussions about vitamins, their effects, whether they are necessary, etc. One vitamin that has gotten a great deal of press lately is Vitamin D. It turns out that this underpublicized vitamin is very important, and its’ benefits are definitely worth knowing. Unfortunately, studies show that the vast majority of Americans are not getting enough. After watching a recent episode of Good Morning America, I thought I’d share some of this important information with you.

Things to Know about Vitamin D

According to recent research findings, some of the benefits of Vitamin D include:
1) Fewer bone fractures- Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium which helps to form and maintain strong bones
2) Reduced risk of heart disease- Vitamin D lowers blood pressure and relaxes the arteries
3) Reduces risk of developing certain cancers
4) Reduces risk of diabetes- Vitamin D helps produce insulin in the body which helps combat diabetes

The best way to get Vitamin D is through sun exposure. Fifteen (15) minutes of sun, 2-3 times a week will give the recommended amount of sun. However, we are all encouraged to wear sun block, which decreases some of the benefits of sun exposure. Therefore, many of us need to get the vitamin through other means. Vitamin D can be gained through food, (fortified milk, egg yolks, fish), and supplements, (fish oil capsules, vitamin D supplements).
The current recommended daily amount of sun you should receive is 400-600 units per day. It is important to not intake too much Vitamin D as it can be toxic and can create other health issues. Vitamin D overexposure is typically not associated with excess sun, or with food intake, but with overindulgence of vitamin D supplements.

With all of the information out there regarding the benefits of Vitamin D, there’s no reason not to work on increasing your Vitamin D intake. I know I will.

If you’ve been watching the national news over the last 6 months, you’ve undoubtedly heard a lot about Chicago, and sadly, much of it hasn’t been good. From the growing murder rate to the infamous Blago scandal, Chicago has been saddled with bad press. But before you dismiss Chicago as just some crime ridden, scandal-plagued city, take a pause. Contrary to what you may have heard, Chicago remains a world-class city with loads of positive aspects, and all of the amenities you could want. Chicago has some of the best shopping, food, and culture in the world. There’s no way to detail all of the fantabulous aspects of Chicago in this blog, so I will give you a few highlights.

A few reasons to love Chicago:

1) World Class Shopping- Chicago’s Michigan Ave. is not called the Magnificent Mile for nothing. Michigan Ave. teems with great stores. The famed Water Tower Place, Ferragamo, Gucci and Bottega Veneta can be found alongside Bloomingdales, Banana Republic and H&M. Want more exclusive shopping? Stroll around the corner to Oak Street where Prada, Barneys and other high-end boutiques can be found. And let’s not forget State Street, home of the once legendary Marshall Field’s flagship location. (Now Macy’s). Mind you, this doesn’t even speak to all of the great shops in Chicago’s neighborhoods, (Lincoln Park, Bucktown, etc) Simply put, you can find any and everything you want or need in Chicago.

2) Dining- Nobody does dining like Chicago. From our beloved deep dish pizza, to 5- star cuisine served by world-renowned chefs, Chicago offers some of the best and widest variety of foods you can find. You want premium Italian, visit Little Italy. In the mood for authentic Chinese food, head to Chinatown. Soul food, Mexican or Thai, you want it, we got it.

3) Architectural Prowess- Some of the world’s most prominent architectural achievements are found here. Chicago’s Sears (now Willis) Tower is still North America’s tallest building, and the third tallest in the world. The 110-story John Hancock building is certainly no slouch either. It houses the magnificent Signature room lounge on the 95th and 96th floors, offering breathtaking views of the city. However, Chicago is not all skyscrapers. Iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed some of his most famous houses here.

4) Mass transit- No matter what people think about the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) or riding on the El train, Chicago is fortunate to have an extensive mass transit system. I have lived in other states, and trust me, extensive mass transit is not always available. Whether by bus or train, you can get just about anywhere in the city without a car.

5) The Arts- The Chicago arts community is bustling. You can enjoy an evening out in our Theatre district to catch one of the nationally acclaimed plays (e.g. Wicked), or visit the famed Second City comedy club for a few laughs. On any given night, you can hear great local talent at one of our many clubs, or you can visit any of our large scale venues for acts such as Maxwell or Musiq Soulchild. Finally, for art lovers, there are a plethora of first-rate museums to tickle your fancy. There really is something for everyone.

6) Beauty- Let me count the ways:
· Architecture- we’ve discussed; ‘nuff said
· Cleanliness-a hybrid of urban jungle and downtown chic, with its population of roughly 3 million people, Chicago manages to remain a clean city. Sorry New Yorkers, we’ve got this one. I love NYC and can’t wait to visit again, but we've got this one.
· Greenery- Chicago loves its trees and flowers
· The best darn skyline the country- Yeah, I said it. There’s nothing like driving down Lake Shore Drive with Lake Michigan on one side, and beautiful skyscrapers lining the other. Chicago’s skyline is a marvel.

Well, I could go on and on, about the culture, diversity, etc. but you get the idea. I hope I’ve given a bit of the other side of the city I know and love. If you live here, you know of what I speak. If you’ve never been, make a visit. I think you’ll like it.

After two less than successful album releases, "Simply Deep" (2002), and "Ms. Kelly" (2007), it seemed certain that Ms. Kelly needed a change. Many have long believed that Mr. Knowles did not give Rowland's career the attention it deserved, as he was consistently busy promoting his main moneymaker, (and daughter), Beyonce. I personally always believed that promotion and radio spins for Rowland were sorely lacking. Interestingly, although Rowland basically flopped in the U.S., she's been quite the hit in the U.K.

Now, under new management, and with a hot cable show (The Fashion Show) in tow, Kelly is back on the American music scene with her featured vocal on the David Guetta's hot single, "When Love Takes Over". The single has already topped the U.K.'s Billboard chart and is gaining airplay in the states. Recently, Kelly spoke about how much she LOVES dance music, and it appears that there will be more to come.

I am a sucker for good home design. I love interior decorating, and am an HGTV fiend. One of my favorite HGTV shows is Divine Design with Candice Olson. Olson is simply a design master, and can work wonders with any type of room. I hope to one day have a space as fabulous as those she designs. Mariah Carey's "Obsessed"- Fantabulous?

Can I get on my soapbox for a moment?

On August 25th, Mariah Carey will release her 14th CD entitled”Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”. Her first single, is current release, “Obsessed”. “Obsessed" is widely seen as a thinly veiled reply (dis) track to a song from Eminem’s current CD. (Carey and Eminem have had a longstanding beef regarding the nature of their previous relationship). ”Obsessed” is a seriously catchy hip/hop R&B flavored track that features slick co-production by superproducers The Dream and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart. It’s hot, it’s fun, it’s formulaic… and that’s the problem.

It’s important to note here that I actually like the song. Or at least it has grown on me. The beat bumps, and it’s hard not to sing along with. More importantly, I am a Mariah Carey fan. I think she is one of the most talented artists of our generation: she sings, she writes, she produces.

But is it me, or does anyone else miss the old Mariah? When Mariah first came onto the scene in 1990 with “Vision of Love”, it was a revelation: top notch songwriting and incredible vocals. MJ and Prince dominated the 80’s, but the 90’s were dominated by Mariah and her 5-octave range. Carey followed “Vision” with hit after hit, e.g. “Can’t Let Go”, “Hero”, “Fantasy”. Carey was on a roll. The Butterfly CD, released after Carey’s split with Sony head Tommy Mottola, is in my opinion some of Carey’s best work ever. Fueled by her recent breakup, Carey penned some of her most profound lyrics. The songwriting, production, and vocals were impeccable. Butterfly was part balladry/part hip-hop: all good. You couldn’t tell me nothing about the Butterfly CD. I played it back and forth and back again.

Fast forward several albums, and many years later and we have “Obsessed”: a funky track on which Carey uses autotune. Mariah Carey of the 4-5 octave range using autotune! What the ? What’s next, Andrea Bocelli doing a collabo with Lil’ Wayne? Autotune is generally reserved for those artists who can’t, or don’t actually sing. Based on her last several live performances, she’s definitely lost a step vocally, but to the point of autotune? It just makes her so, well, ordinary.
Now, I understand that times, and music have changed since Carey’s debut. Every artist seeks to remain relevant. However Carey is approaching 40 years old. I think dis tracks and autotune should be left to the younger crew. Shouldn’t your work grow as you do?

I really say this out of love. Mariah has been one of the best artists we’ve had, and I just don't want her to sound like everyone else. Her 2005 hit single, "We Belong Together" proves that some of the old Mariah is still there. Perhaps I am jumping the gun. Maybe the rest of her new CD will prove me wrong.
